Edin Terzic, the coach who led Borussia Dortmund to the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final, has stepped down as head coach.

The 41-year-old Bosnian-German tactician stepped down shortly after Dortmund’s defeat against Real Madrid in the final.

Edin Terzic had a remarkable tenure at Borussia Dortmund, serving as an assistant coach under Thomas Tuchel and Peter Bosz. In a heartfelt video message to fans, Terzic expressed his decision:

“Even though it really hurts, I want to inform you that I will leave BVB today. It was a huge honor to lead this club to a DFB Cup final and recently a Champions League final.”

“After our final at Wembley, I asked the club bosses for a talk because I’ve been at BVB for over 10 years now, with five as a coach and two-and-a-half as head coach.”

“I have the feeling that our new beginning should also come with someone new on the touchline. After intense discussions, my feeling hasn’t changed. I wish Borussia Dortmund all the best. It’s not goodbye, but till next time.”

Edin Terzic’s Achievements

During his time as assistant coach, the team achieved significant success, including finishing as Bundesliga runner-up in the 2016/17 season and reaching the DFB-Pokal final.

When he took over as head coach in December 2020, Terzic guided Dortmund to a DFB-Pokal triumph, a Champions League final, and a top-four Bundesliga finish in the 2020/21 season. He has also played a crucial role in developing young talents like Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, and Gio Reyna.

Dortmund finished fifth in the Bundesliga this season but still qualified for the Champions League due to their efforts on the European stage. The Bundesliga earned an extra spot from the new European performance spots in the 2024/25 season.

The departure of Terzic leaves Dortmund searching for a new head coach and German media reported that current assistant coach Nuri Sahin will be the new head coach.

Meanwhile, the team will head to Japan for preseason preparations before kicking off the new campaign in the DFB Cup against Phonix Lubeck on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The Bundesliga season kicks off a week after that.

Terzic's tactical flexibility, commitment to attacking football, and ability to manage a talented squad will leave a lasting impact on Dortmund. His decision to step down after the Champions League final reflects his desire for a fresh start and new leadership at the club.

While rumors suggest that Terzic may explore coaching opportunities outside Germany, no official confirmation has been made, leaving football enthusiasts eagerly awaiting news about his future destination.
